Dennis M. Campbell Elected Trustee of the Duke Endowment

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Educational administrator and religious leader Dennis M. Campbell, Ph.D., was elected a trustee of The Duke Endowment at the foundation’s January 6 meeting in Charlotte.

“Dennis Campbell has distinguished himself as a United Methodist minister, as a religious educator and administrator, and as a leader in private education,” said Russell M. Robinson II, chairman of the board of The Duke Endowment. “His impressive background and his strong ties to both North Carolina and South Carolina will be tremendously valuable to us, and we are thrilled to have him join us on the board.”

Campbell is headmaster of Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. He has led Woodberry Forest, one of the nation’s leading independent residential secondary schools, since 1997. He served as dean of the Divinity School and professor of theology at Duke University from 1982 until 1997.

A noted author and lecturer in the field of theology, ethics and moral formation, Campbell is also a respected authority on United Methodism and American culture.

Born in Texas and raised in the Chicago suburb of Elmwood Park, Campbell is a 1967 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University, where he earned an A.B. in English. He earned his B.D. degree from Yale University in 1970 and returned to Duke to earn his Ph.D. in religion in 1973.
