Varsity Tennis Wins Against Norfolk Academy

On a cold, windy Saturday morning the Tigers survived the elements and a solid Norfolk Academy team to move to 4-2 on the season. We started the match with 4 doubles matches of 8 game pro sets. Our strongest duo was Rob Fauntleroy and Billy Hereford with a convincing 8-2 victory at number 2 doubles. Rob Galloway and Rags Coxe used a new formation picked up from watching UVA play doubles on Friday afternoon and prevailed 8-5 in a much closer number 1 doubles match. Lem Doss and Kelvin Whitcher came out of the gates a little slow at number 3 doubles as they seemed to still be enjoying  Pierces Pitt Cooked Barbecue from the night before and found themselves down 4-1 in a race to 8. They fought back from trailing 7-6 and came through big time with a 9-7 victory. Lat Peak and Wilson Hallett lost a close one at number 4 doubles 10-8.
In singles we needed to win at least two of the six singles after winning all 3 of the doubles for a team victory. Rob Galloway displayed confidence, poise, and match experience to win 6-4, 6-3 at number 1 singles. In all of the other 5 singles matches we were either even or behind for a good while so Norfolk played smart and effective singles. Billy Hereford set a new record for the longest first game of the match which literally went on for 25 minutes. He trailed for most of the first set, but finally found his rhythm to win 6-4 after being down 4-3. Rags had a solid first set at number 2 singles, but then lost his focus to trail 5-2 in the second set. To his credit he shifted gears and forced a second set tiebreaker, which he won 7-1. So we had our 5 points for a team victory. Meanwhile Billy was kicking it into another gear as he found out we were going to Chick Filet and Dairy Queen for lunch to win the second set 6-2. Our guys down the line had a tough time with the wind and their opponents. Rob Fauntleroy lost a close first set in a tiebreaker and came up a little short. Lem Doss ran into a consistent baseline player that outplayed him at number 5 singles while Kelvin Whitcher lost in straight sets at number 6 singles. Wilson and Lat both lost very close singles exhibitions 11-10 and 10-8.
It was a good road victory over a well coached team at Norfolk. More importantly the team received several compliments on how they handled themselves and genuinely enjoyed being with each other. We open our home season with the always close match against EHS on Thursday.
