Fall Golf Update

During the fall, several members of the varsity golf team practice each day in preparation for the spring season. While fall golf is not an official sport in the fall (football, soccer, and cross country are the official fall sports), these juniors and seniors, and a few select under-formers, play in several challenge matches. The team has played extremely well in three matches. The results are posted below.

Baylor Retains Tullis-Oehmig Cup

The Baylor School defeated Woodberry Forest in the 4th Annual Tullis-Oehmig Cup, September 20-21, by the score of 7 1/2 to 4 1/2. The Ryder Cup style match was played at the Birdwood Golf Club in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Saturday afternoon's four-ball play left Baylor ahead 2 - 1. The Tigers' point winners were the #3 team of fifth former Dean Norman (Greensboro, NC) and fourth former Trace Henderson (Burlington, NC), who defeated their Baylor rivals 4 & 3. It was the first loss this pair from Baylor has had all season. Woodberry's #2 group, seniors Stuart Coleman (Middleburg, VA) and Harry Peery (Galax, VA) lost to a hot-putting Baylor pair, while Woodberry's #1 team of senior Will Strickler (Charlottesville, VA) and fifth former Grant Rafield (Birmingham, AL) went to the final hole before bowing out.

Sunday morning's alternate shot format saw both teams win a match. Baylor's #2 group continued their strong play, winning 7 & 6. Woodberry's #1 team of Strickler and Rafield easily downed Baylor's #1 team, 7 & 6. Norman and Henderson enjoined a terrific battle in their match, finally going 1 up with a birdie on hole 15, but then having Baylor come back to square the match on hole 16. After halving hole 17, both teams bogeyed the final hole to end up in a tie.

Sunday afternoon's singles play is where Baylor showed its superior depth, winning four of the six matches. Henderson and Norman again supplied Woodberry's points by winning their matches.

The Tullis-Oehmig Cup was established by both schools to honor two distinguished alumni and great friends, Eli Tullis ('45) from Woodberry and the late Lew Oehmig from Baylor.
