Red Caughron Inducted into VA Sports Hall of Fame

Nearly 150 Woodberry Tigers gathered to celebrate the induction of Harry W. “Red” Caughron, Woodberry's former athletic director and head football coach, into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame on April 25, 2009, in Portsmouth, VA.

A native of Sevierville, TN, Red played football at the College of William & Mary, where he co-captained the squad that defeated Oklahoma State in the 1948 Delta Bowl, and completed both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Red became head football coach at James Wood High School, in Winchester, VA, in 1950. He later coached at Washington High School and Hammond High School in Alexandria, VA, before joining Woodberry in 1960. He became athletic director in 1961, and founded the Woodberry Forest Sports Camp with his wife, Cathy, in 1967. He retired in 1992.

Over thirty-one seasons as Woodberry’s head coach, Caughron compiled a record of 217 wins, fifty-six losses, and seven ties—one of the best among Virginia high school coaches. His teams, eight of which were undefeated, earned fifteen conference championships. He is an eight-time Virginia Prep League coach of the year.

Red Caughron is in good company. Fellow inductees are Bill Cochran, Virginia Press Association award recipient and veteran outdoors editor for the Roanoke Times; Tom Dolan, Olympic gold medalist in swimming and world record-holder; Tom Duquette, Virginia Cavalier lacrosse All-American and U. S. Lacrosse Hall of Famer; Brian Jordan, University of Richmond two-sport star, who enjoyed a career in both professional football and baseball; Jane Mack, one of the “Four Aces” of Virginia Ladies Amateur Golf; and George Welsh, College Football Hall of Fame inductee and winningest coach in U. Va. and ACC history.
