Bengal Basketball Falls to Collegiate

The Bengals had their five game win streak snapped with a 57 - 60 loss to Collegiate.  After winning the opening tap, Woodberry turned the ball over and the Cougars took the ball in for a quick two points.  An unforced turnover on the ensuing inbounds play gave Collegiate the ball back and they promptly hit a 3 pointer to take a 5 - 0 lead just seconds into the game.  The two early turnovers pretty much set the tone for the first half.  The Bengals did not take care of the ball and allowed Collegiate too many easy shots.  After trailing 3 - 11, the Tigers went on a 8 to 2 run to end the quarter down 11 - 13.

Woodberry continued their run to start the second quarter and took a 17 - 15 lead with 5:25 remaining in the half when Marshal Deal drained a 3 pointer.  Unfortunately a multitude of turnovers and poor decisions allowed Collegiate to go on a 17 - 1 run.   At halftime, the Bengals found themselves trailing 22 - 34.  Collegiate continued to shoot the ball well to start the second half and built their lead to 20.  The Tigers kept battling and trimmed the deficit to 17 to end the third quarter down 31 - 48.

In the fourth quarter, the Bengals did not turn the ball over once and Marshal and Wallace Branche took over offensively.  Marshall hit four 3 points while scoring 16 of his game high 26 points in the final period.  Wallace played well down low and scored 6 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter.  But Woodberry had dug itself too big of a hole and could simply not close the margin.  The Cougars still led 60 - 50 with 1:18 remaining, and when Marshall was fouled with 1 second left, he hit a couple free throws to make it 57 - 60.

Only five Bengals scored today.  In addition to Marshall and Wallace, Drew Meeks had 10, Shep Hardison scored 4 and David Little added a 3 pointer.  Woodberry was simply outplayed today in most phases of the game.  Collegiate beat the Bengals' defense down the court for too many easy shots and went after the rebounds more aggressively.

After 4 consecutive homes games, the Tigers are on the road for their next 4 games.  Up next is Covenant School at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
