Bengal Basketball Falls to St. Chris

The Bengal basketball team traveled to Richmond Tuesday to take on St. Christopher's School.  An uninspired first half by the Tigers allowed the Saints to build an early lead and Woodberry lost 44 - 50.  Today's starters were Spencer Taylor, Marshall Deal, David Little, Drew Meeks and Wallace Branche.  St. Chris jumped out to an early 6 - 0 lead before Spencer got Woodberry on the board with a bucket for 2 of his 5 points on the day.  Edwin Borden came off the bench to get a hoop for 2 of his 6 points, and Wallace added a free throw, but the Tigers were only able to score 5 points in the opening period.  Defensively, Woodberry allowed too many open looks and the Saints led 14 - 5 after one quarter.

The Bengals started the second quarter with more energy and scored some good baskets.  Shep Hardison had a steal and was fouled while he drove to the basket for a score.  Shep finished off the three point play by hitting his free throw.  David also drove the lane and converted a three point play of his own.  However, St. Chris hit some big shots as well, including a three pointer with one second remaining in the half to push their lead back up to 9.  Woodberry was trailing at halftime 15 - 24.

After being held scoreless in the first half, Marshall brought the Bengals back in the third quarter as he drained 4 three pointers.  Marshal ended the game with 16 points.  Spencer added a three pointer, while Edwin went 3 for 4 from the line during the quarter.  Wallace scored 4 of his 7 points in the third quarter as well.  Suddenly, the Bengals found themselves trailing 37 - 39 and were back in the game.  After a defensive stop, Woodberry had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead, but could not quite get over the hump.  Despite a good effort in the fourth quarter and some strong rebounding by Wallace who had 5 offensive and 4 defensive boards for the game, the Saints continued to hit their free throws to put the game away.

The loss evened the Bengal's record at 1 - 1.  The team looks to get back in the win column on Saturday when they host Blue Ridge School at 2:00 pm.
