Woodberry's defense set the game's hard-hitting tone with a fumble recovery on FUMA's first possession. However, after the offense stalled, Fork Union drove for an early touchdown and 2-point conversion.
Those turned out to be FUMA's only points of the day.
Woodberry responded by driving the length of the field. Michael Adams ran behind the trap blocks of Robbie McDermott for several first downs, setting the stage for the touchdown strike: Borden Porter's 10 yard pass to CJ Prosise, who leaped over the defender to make the Randy Moss-style catch.
Woodberry's defense held firm the rest of the first half and into the second. They forced two more turnovers: a fumble recovery, and an interception by Jay Mitchener. (The Tigers did not turn the ball over even once.) On one drive, Josh Butler had the key hit in the backfield to force a punt.
Through the first part of the second half, the offense was stymied. But they came to life in the spread formation. Cary Jones ran up the middle behind a powerful o-line push, and dragged half of the Blue Devil defense behind him for a first down. When Fork Union pinched in to stop the mighty tank that is Mr. Jones, Porter rolled out for a long pass to Prosise. Woodberry's second touchdown came on a 20 yard pass from Porter to Jeff Smith - though the play was not designed to go to him, Smith noticed he was open, turned around, and caught a little flip pass. His legs did the rest. A two point pass from Porter to Charlie Archer put the Tigers up by 6.
On the ensuing kickoff, the FUMA return man broke free. Michael Adams caught him up from behind to make the game-saving tackle. The defense forced a punt, but the offense could only garner one first down.
Enter Will Newton.
"Fig" Newton had never punted in a game before today. Nevertheless, he pinned Fork Union deep with a monstrous kick, his third excellent punt of the day. After a defensive stop, the offense went into clock management mode, running against a stacked defense but grinding the clock down to 1:30. Newton punted from the 30 yard line, and sent an unreturnable pooch kick out of bounds at the two yard line.
From there, Josh Butler brought down the FUMA quarterback behind the line of scrimmage with a tremendous hit - safety, Woodberry.
Once again, the Tigers tried to run out the clock, this time stalling around the 30 yard line with just 20 seconds left. In a duplicate of his previous feat, Newton dropped yet another pooch inside the 10. From there, three defensive plays ended the game for the Tiger victory.
The JV (1-0) next plays on Friday, October 3, at Collegiate at 3:00.
