Woodberry entered the state tournament as the 6th seed despite winning the prep league title by 9 points over the weekend. So we had something to prove and a score to settle with the boys from The High School in Alexandria. About two weeks ago EHS trailed in our regular season match 3-2 when weather interrupted the match. Despite phone calls and e-mails to their athletic director there was very little effort made on the part of EHS for several days to finish the match. So our crew was frustrated and ready to clear up any confusion as to who had a better team. We came out in singles with a vengeance at the bottom of our lineup and made quick work of the 4, 5, and 6 singles. Billy Hereford, Rob Galloway, and Tom Ellington all had convincing wins in the 10-2 to 10-3 range. So quickly the Maroons were in trouble having to win at least 2 of the other 3 matches on the court to stay alive. There was little suspense at number 1 as Sam Funkhouser methodically buried his opponent 10-4 with his big serve. Woodberry 4 EHS 0. The last 2 singles matches on the court were Phillip Taylor at number 2 and Daniel Holst at number 3. Both matches were back and forth and up for grabs. The High School avoided getting shut out by winning 10-8 at number 2. Holsty had a slight lead throughout his match, but could not hold his serve or finish on some of his overheads. So he was up 9-8 and had to break his opponent's serve to win the match. He finally prevailed as he forced his opponent to hit the ball wide on his approach shot. Woodberry 5 EHS 1
In doubles we gave some of the other players a chance to play as we rested our top 2 players since we had already clinched the team victory. Daniel and Sam Mikell lost 8-5 at number one doubles. Tom Ellington and Rob Galloway won a close one at number two doubles 9-7 over two brothers from Charleston. Rags Coxe and Rob Fauntleroy ran into a strong number 3 team and lost 8-3. Billy Hereford and Peter Wilson prevailed at number 4 doubles 8-5.
For the`season our overall match record improves to 15-4. We also won the Virginia Prep League over the weekend for the 5th time in the last 6 years. Not too shabby for the 6th best team in the state!
