Close but no victory cigar---
We had a great day on the singles courts as Woodberry fought for 2 and half hours to spilt 6 matches. The first man off was Rob Galloway at number 3 singles with a convincing 8-0, 6-2 victory. Collegiate won at number one singles as Phillip Taylor came up a little short 7-5, 6-2. Collegiate won over Daniel Holst at number 2 singles 6-3, 6-2. The number 6 match was the next one to finish as Tim Perry lost another heartbreaker in 3 sets 6-4 in the third. Tom Ellington was once again playing a close friend in a shootout at the OK corral. Tom won the first set, but then Buddy Carter (one of the best kids I ever met) rallied to win the second set. With cameras flashing and assistant coach Massie Valentine offering sage wisdom Tommy E. kicked it into another level and prevailed 6-4 in the third set. That left the Bama diehard Billy Hereford to fight for our third point. Billy won the first set in a tiebreaker, lost the second set 7-5, and fought like no other to get to the third set tiebreaker. He somehow found enough energy to win 7-3 for our third victory.
Doubles started well with Tom and Sam Mikell completely dominating 8-2 at number 3 for our 4th point. It looked like both of the other two doubles could win as each team moved to an early lead. At number 1 doubles Daniel Holst and Rob Galloway came up just short as they lost 8-6. Rags Coxe and Phillip Taylor led for most of the match, but ended up on the short end of a 9-7 loss.
It was a great high school tennis match where Woodberry failed to finish the job as we lost focus on doubles discipline and couldn't take advantage of our superb effort in singles.
Overall team record 12-4
