Varsity Tennis wins against top-ranked team in Tidewater area

On Friday the tennis team headed for its Virginia Beach road trip with a 3 hour drive to play Cape Henry. We started with four doubles matches and it was obvious that some of us were still on the minivan. Rob Galloway and Phillip Taylor were clearly the exception as they took complete control at number 2 doubles with a 10-0 victory. Sam Funkhouser and Daniel Holst struggled to find their consistency and rhythm and trailed most of the match at number 1 doubles. To their credit they rallied for a 11-9 victory. Tommy E and Sam Mikell came up a little short at number 3 doubles. Woodberry also won a 4th doubles match as Tim and Billy totally dominated.
Singles saw better play from the middle of the lineup as Phillip Taylor won quickly at number 3 and fellow rookies Billy Herf and Robby G. won in straight sets at number 4 and 5. So we had the team victory clinched. Daniel Holst played Cape Henry's best player at number 2 and lost in straight sets. Sam Mikell did an outstanding job at number 6 with a 7-5, 6-4 victory. Sam Funkhouser found a way to win at number 1 even though he did not play his best tennis as he prevailed 7-5, 6-3. Final score Woodberry 7 Cape Henry 2. This was the top ranked team in the Tidewater area's first loss of the season.
