Varsity Football Falls to Prep League Rival Fork Union
Mistakes and Missed Chances Haunt Tigers
Mistakes cost Woodberry its season opener against Blair and came back to haunt the team again in a 24-14 loss to Fork Union. Despite making errors at critical times, the Tigers still played hard and had a chance to win in the fourth quarter.
Head Coach Bill Davis said, “We could have won this game but we made too many big mistakes. There was no doubt that FUMA was bigger, faster, and stronger, but despite the odds our boys generally find a way to win. Unfortunately, that did not happen on Saturday.”
After a scoreless first quarter, Woodberry jumped on the board first with a 17 yard TD run from Akin Oyalowo. Fork Union responded with 17 unanswered points over the next two quarters.
Down 17-6 in the 3rd quarter, the Tigers began to seize the momentum to mount a comeback reminiscent of the one two years ago at FUMA that won that game. George Purrington’s second interception set up Jim Woolford’s 31 yard TD. Sheldon Alexander’s pass to Spotty Robins for the two point conversion made the score 17-14.
Fork Union moved the ball inside the Tigers’ 10 yard line on its next possession, but Woodberry forced a fumble to give itself a chance to take the lead. After moving the ball to midfield in just two plays, Woodberry lost a fumble of its own that Fork Union returned for a touchdown and a 24-14 lead.
Missed chances plagued the team’s thoughts after the game. The Tigers rushed for 253 yards, including Oyalowo’s 157 yards and a TD and Woolford’s 75 yards and a TD, but could not convert inside the five on one drive and lost a fumble inside the one on another.
“We are not going to win games unless we stop making turnovers,” said Davis.
Woodberry travels to Charlotte Christian for a 2:00 P.M. game on Saturday.
