A Message from the Headmaster

Dear Woodberry Community:

After a number of conversations over many months about the direction of athletics and the leadership of the football program, Clint Alexander and I have agreed that this will be his last season as head football coach at Woodberry Forest. I understand that change can be difficult, and we agree that communication of this news is important for our wider community. We want to give this year’s Tigers the opportunity to enjoy and celebrate Coach Alexander’s final season.

Since his arrival in 2005, Coach Alexander’s varsity football teams have won eight Prep League titles, and have defeated Episcopal High School seven times. Dozens of his players have continued on to become student-athletes at the collegiate level, and three Tigers have gone on to play in the National Football League.

Clint and his wife, Elaine, have also worked tirelessly to nurture and grow the Woodberry Sports Camp. On their watch, the camp has grown from 106 campers in 2007 to 192 (plus a waiting list) this past year. Clint and Elaine have a giant heart for the boys, and their leadership of this iconic and beloved Woodberry program has been nothing short of transformational.

Far more important than championships on the field or numbers of boys at Sports Camp is the fact that Coach Alexander has, from the start, emphasized team values of unselfishness, discipline, leadership, accountability, and family. Every sports camper and Woodberry boy who has played football during the Alexander years understands the importance of these values for life off the field. The fact that so many Woodberry football boys are school leaders is a testament to the culture that Coach Alexander has fostered over the years.

Coach Alexander remains committed to the Woodberry football program and the school, and we both see the rest of this season as a chance for him to finish strong and secure the culture of excellence that he has brought to the community. After the fall trimester, Clint will step aside from Woodberry Forest while Elaine will continue her work in the admissions office. The Alexander family will continue to live on Griffin House through the remainder of the school year.

At the conclusion of the season, Athletic Director Matt Blundin and I will begin an open search for his successor. In closing, I want to take an opportunity now to express that I will always be grateful for the Alexander family’s many contributions to the Woodberry community throughout their tenure at the school.

Sincerely,

Byron C. Hulsey
Headmaster
