New Faculty Members Welcomed

A dozen new members of the Woodberry Forest School faculty gathered on August 22, 2016, for orientation sessions. Woodberry warmly welcomes each of the new teachers, teaching fellows, and administrators.

Kristyn Wilson, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, serves as a Kenan-Lewis Fellow in the English department and coaches JV cross country and swimming.

Abbie Ryan teaches math and engineering, coaches football, and serves as the adviser for the robotics team. She is a graduate of Rice University and previously worked as a senior engineer and project manager at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.

Ty Adams, a graduate of Appalachian State University, serves as a Kenan-Lewis Fellow, teaching history and coaching varsity soccer and varsity baseball.

Tony Watson teaches history and coaches JV football and lacrosse. A graduate of the University of Cambridge, Harvard University, and The Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Watson's previous career includes serving as a professor and administrator at Brown University.

Lewis Affronti teaches science and coaches JV basketball and lacrosse. A graduate of the Sewanee: The University of the South, he has previously served as a Kenan-Lewis Fellow at Woodberry Forest and has taught at other independent schools.

Frazier Stowers ’04 serves as director of admissions. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College and a master’s degree from Georgetown University. He previously served as a teacher and administrator at Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland.

Ace Ellis serves as chief financial officer and treasurer. He holds a degree in mathematical economics from Wake Forest University and a master’s in business administration from the University of Richmond. Mr. Ellis has served as chief financial officer at Emma Willard School and has worked in banking and as a consultant to independent schools.

Dave Mabe serves as associate director of college counseling and heads Woodberry’s summer programming. Mr. Mabe is a graduate of Davidson College and the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. He previously served as director of scholar selection for the Morehead-Cain Foundation at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Jacob Geiger ’05 serves as director of strategic communications and teaches journalism. A former reporter and editor at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Mr. Geiger is a graduate of Washington and Lee University. He joined the faculty in January 2016.

Matt Blundin serves as athletic director and teaches mathematics. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Virginia where he was quarterback and co-captain of the football team and forward and co-captain of the basketball team. He later played for two NFL teams: the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions and worked in Albemarle County Public Schools.

Daquan Daly teaches science and coaches indoor and outdoor track and field. He is a graduate of Williams College.

James Erickson serves as an instructor in the visual arts program. A painter educated at the University of Virginia and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, he has a studio in Culpeper.

Phil Hooper serves as director of college counseling. He holds a BA from Hendrix College and has worked in both college admissions and college counseling, most recently at Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock, Arkansas.
