Davidson College President Speaks at Cum Laude Initiation

Dr. Carol E. Quillen, president of Davidson College, was the guest speaker at the initiation ceremony for the Woodberry Forest Chapter of the Cum Laude Society on April 21, 2014, in Bowman Gray Auditorium. Eleven members of the sixth form joined nine of their classmates in the honor society, as did nine fifth formers.

Following the presentation of certificates and pins, Dr. Quillen took the podium to share the surprises her own college education held for her. She urged her listeners to use their time in college to question and ask, "What if?" and "Why not?"

"What if time went both backward and forward?" she wondered aloud, and talked about how her own study of history led her to see how present events change the way history is understood, seemingly changing the past itself. Dr. Quillen also applauded Woodberry's community of trust, noting the intellectual courage such a community allows its members.

The Cum Laude Society is a high school honor society recognizing up to twenty percent of the students of each class who exhibit values that parallel those of Woodberry Forest School: excellence, justice, and honor. The Woodberry Forest Chapter was established in 1952, and all faculty members who were Phi Beta Kappa members are considered to be members of the society.

Please see the Cum Laude Convocaton Program for more about the inductees and the distinguished guest speaker.
