Planned Giving

Much of Woodberry’s long-term success was built by friends of the school who included Woodberry in their estate plans. These gifts, whether directed toward specific priorities such as tuition assistance and faculty support or given without restriction, provide the firm financial foundation upon which the school is built. They help ensure the school has the resources it needs to prepare boys for their futures.

Any alumnus or friend of the school who has made provisions for Woodberry in a will, annuity, trust, retirement account, or life insurance policy is automatically a member of the Walker Society. Current members of the society include alumni, parents, grandparents, and faculty members, both past and current.

About the Walker Society

 
Named for Joseph G. and Violet N. Walker, the Walker Society was established in 1992 by the Woodberry Forest board of trustees to honor those who choose to sustain the mission of the school through planned and estate gifts. Joseph Goss Walker was the second oldest son of the school’s founder, Robert Stringfellow Walker. After graduating Woodberry he stayed at the Forest to assist his father on the farm. He subsequently served as a proctor at the school and eventually its business manager.

His wife, Violet, brought wonderful energy to Woodberry. Violet’s true love was horticulture. She started a nursery, ornamented the grounds, and maintained the gardens around the Walker Building and The Residence. Her talent was widely recognized, and she was instrumental in the creation of the Garden Club of Virginia, serving as one of its original presidents. In addition to their nearly 50 years of service, Joseph and Violet Walker so loved Woodberry that they left their estate to the school.


The Residence

Woodberry Forest admits students of any race, color, sexual orientation, disability, religious belief, and national or ethnic origin to all of the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.
