Legendary Lacrosse Coach Dom Starsia Visits Woodberry
Legendary lacrosse coach Dom Starsia visited Woodberry Forest on Monday to work with members of the school’s lacrosse teams.
Coach Starsia led drills during the varsity practice alongside Woodberry Head Coach Spotty Robins ’04 before speaking with players from all three of the school’s lacrosse teams at the conclusion of practice.
He said that as a coach he values toughness but that many players define that trait in the wrong way, focusing on the biggest hits or being the strongest player.
“Toughness is really about consistency,” Coach Starsia said. It’s doing the right thing over and over again and doing it when it needs to be done.”
Coach Starsia won national titles in 1999, 2003, 2006, and 2011 while head lacrosse coach at the University of Virginia. Prior to his twenty-three years as head coach at UVa he was an assistant coach and then for ten years head coach at Brown University, his alma mater. On three occasions he was named national coach of the year, and he was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2008.
Coach Starsia said every successful team during his coaching career had players who were great leaders.
“The best leaders are fearless and resilient,” he said. “Playing a sport means getting knocked on your butt sometimes; the best players and the best leaders get back up and keep going.”
The visit to Woodberry was arranged by Coach Robins. “This is a wonderful opportunity for the boys to hear from one of the finest coaches, people, and mentors in the history of our sport,” Coach Robins said.
