Reverend Tyler Montgomery Named to Woodberry Chaplaincy

Woodberry Forest School is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev. Tyler Montgomery as chaplain and assistant to the head for student wholeness. Headmaster Byron Hulsey noted that he is “delighted with the outcome of this very competitive search and very eager to welcome the Montgomery family to Woodberry Forest.”
Rev. Montgomery is currently college chaplain at The College of William & Mary and associate rector of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church in Williamsburg. He will join Woodberry’s faculty late this summer. He’ll take responsibility for the school’s spiritual life, lead the chapel program, teach courses in Bible, and coordinate Woodberry’s efforts to provide a healthy, holistic environment for the boys on campus.

Rev. Montgomery has deep experience with boarding schools, serving previously as a Spanish teacher, coach, and admission officer at Asheville School. He’s also a graduate of St. Andrew’s School in Delaware, where he received the Headmaster’s Award for distinctive contributions to the culture of the school and the Henry Prize for outstanding contributions to athletics.

“Tyler will be an excellent addition to our campus life,” Dr. Hulsey said. “Already in his career he’s shown a passion for working in all-boys’ boarding schools and making sure students are known, challenged, and loved.”

Rev. Montgomery attended Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, graduating with a masters of divinity degree. While at Yale he also attended Magdalene College, Cambridge University, on an exchange program. He holds a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Pennsylvania and was a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica.

Mary Montgomery, Rev. Montgomery’s wife, will also join the Woodberry faculty and teach mathematics and coach soccer. After graduating from the University of Georgia, she taught math at the Asheville School, where she received the Irvin H. Ornduff Master Teaching Prize, presented to a teacher who has been in his or her career for no more than five years and who has displayed excellence in his or her work. A former high school state champion soccer player, Mary currently teaches at Warhill High School in Williamsburg.

“Both Mary and I are very excited to join the Woodberry community,” Rev. Montgomery said. “Woodberry is clearly a special place, and every part of the community resonated with us, from students to faculty.”
