Crozier Reception and Artist Talk to Take Place December 7

Repository of Missing PlacesPaintings by Richard Crozier Nov. 1 - Dec. 20, 2017Baker Gallery, Walker Fine Arts Center, Woodberry Forest School. There is a reception from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 7 featuring a gallery talk by the artist. Also, Crozier will be signing copies of the book Repository of Missing Places: Richard Crozier's Paintings of Lost & Kept Charlottesville at the reception.

Richard Crozier was born in Hawaii. He received a BFA from the University of Washington in Seattle and an MFA from the University of California-Davis. In graduate school, he studied with noted artists Wayne Thiebaud, William T. Wiley, and Roy De Forest. From 1974 through 2011 he taught drawing and painting in the McIntire Department of Art at the University of Virginia. He currently resides in Charlottesville.

Over the last forty years, in thousands of paintings, Crozier has documented the "landscape in flux" of Charlottesville and the surrounding area. Collectively, the paintings not only serve as a "visual diary" for the artist but also as a dynamic portrait of the city. As a plein air painter, albeit from the front seat of his car, Crozier is drawn to changes occurring in the built environment. He observes carefully and records them directly, with a distinct pictorial interest in the abstract qualities of the site. Many of the paintings in this exhibition are featured in the book Repository of Missing Places: Richard Crozier’s Paintings of Lost & Kept Charlottesville. Chroma Projects published the book in 2016 with major support provided by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Visitors to the gallery may purchase the book during the dates of the exhibition. The artist will sign copies of the book at the reception.

The event is free and open to the public.
