Journalism Class Takes Field Trip to UVA Women's Soccer Competition

Members of Woodberry’s journalism class got an up-close look at the excitement and challenges of sports reporting Thursday when they received press credentials to cover the University of Virginia’s women’s soccer game against Duke University.

The Blue Devils, ranked second in the country, triumphed 1-0 on the tenth-ranked Cavalier’s senior night thanks to a goal by Kat McDonald in the 87th minute. The win clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference title for Duke.

After the game Woodberry’s reporters conducted on-field interviews with Cavalier players Veronica Latsko, Megan Reid and Montana Sutton. After the game the student reporters discussed the challenge of interviewing disappointed players immediately after a close loss and the pressure of filing stories on tight deadlines.

The journalism class, now in its second year, allows Woodberry students to learn and practice the basics of reporting and storytelling in both written and visual mediums. Students cover both on- and off-campus stories, meet working journalists, and travel to watch newsrooms or reporters in action.
