Woodberry Third Formers Recognized in Writer's Eye Contest

Three third formers earned recognition in Writer's Eye, a literary contest held by the University of Virginia's Fralin Museum of Art. Now in its thirtieth year, the competition challenges participants to produce a piece of poetry or prose inspired by a work of art to be judged by distinguished members of the literary community. Woodberry Forest School's entire third form visited the museum on October 17, 2016, with their English classes.

Rhew Deigl ’20 placed second in the high school prose category with his story "Not Coming Back," inspired by the engraving The Convalescent by William Strang. Blythe Brewster ’20 placed third in the same category with her story "Phobia," inspired by a photograph Sayed by Shirin Neshat. And Tripp Hood received an honorable mention for his poem "The Divide" inspired by a photograph James Forman by Danny Lyon.

English teacher Karen Broaddus notes, "There were 1,758 entries to the literary competition this year. The top three winners in each category will be published in an anthology." Woodberry has participated since 2010 and boasts several award-winning entries.
