Dr. Ansel Sanders ’00 to Join Woodberry Faculty

Ansel Sanders, who served as senior prefect for the class of 2000, will join the Woodberry Forest School faculty this summer.

Ansel is currently president and CEO of Public Education Partners, a foundation that works to strengthen and advance public education and student achievement in Greenville County, South Carolina. He joined PEP in 2015 after receiving his doctorate in education leadership from Harvard University.

At Woodberry he will be a member of the English Department, serve as secretary to the board of trustees, and serve on the headmaster’s executive leadership team. Ansel will also coach lacrosse and serve as a faculty advisor.

"I am delighted that Ansel will join the Woodberry community next year,” Headmaster Byron Hulsey said. “His experience as an alumnus, teacher, coach, and leader in the world of education positions him perfectly to serve the school in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in partnership with the board of trustees as secretary. We're eager to welcome Ansel, Helen, and their daughters to Woodberry this summer."

Ansel graduated magna cum laude from Washington and Lee University with a degree in English. He was a four-year member of the lacrosse team there and earned all-American honors on two occasions. He was also an academic all-American and the 2004 conference player of the year. He earned a masters in teaching degree from The Johns Hopkins University while serving with Teach for America in Baltimore.

In 2009 he was appointed the founding program director for A.J. Whittenberg Elementary School of Engineering in Greenville, S.C. and later served as lead planner for the Dr. Phinnize J. Fisher Middle School in Greenville.

Ansel and his wife, Helen, have three daughters. Helen holds a degree in business administration from Washington and Lee University, where she is a member of the board of trustees, and a master’s of real estate development from Clemson University.
