Alumni Return to the Forest to Reconnect with Classmates, Faculty, and School

Woodberry Forest welcomed back 650 alumni and guests to campus April 20-22 for Reunion Weekend.

Alumni ranging from the classes of 1943 to 2013 were in attendance, led by the fifty-seven members of the Class of 1968 who gathered for their fiftieth reunion. On Friday night the class gathered to honor Paul Huber ’68, the class valedictorian and for the past forty-six years a teacher and administrator at Woodberry. In recognition of Mr. Huber’s service to Woodberry and to support tuition assistance, the class raised more than $550,000 for its 50th reunion gift, the newly established Paul S. Huber, III ’68 Scholarship Fund. The fund will now be open to all alumni and parents.

The returning alumni enjoyed beautiful weather throughout the weekend as they explored campus, visited classes, watched athletic contests, and attended special events. Of particular note were the alumni assembly featuring Headmaster Byron Hulsey discussing how Woodberry is preparing boys for their future; a presentation by Frank Walker ’53 on Woodberry’s land and people; an author round table featuring faculty member Ted Blain, Jon Buchan ’68, and Chris Swann ’88; and a slideshow by Richard Barnhardt ’66 on the school’s history.

Alumni, coaches, and members of the class of 1961 gathered Saturday morning for the dedication of a new portrait of Dick Glover ’61 at the Dick Gym. Mr. Glover, a legendary member of the faculty and head wrestling coach for three decades, remains a frequent visitor to campus. The weekend also included the dedication of a new portrait of Samuel B. McLaughlin, who taught on the science faculty in two different stints and served as the school’s disciplinarian.

Woodberry looks forward to welcoming back graduates of classes ending in a ‘4’ or ‘9’ for the next Reunion Weekend on April 26-28, 2019.
