Stephen Hobbs ’79

United States Navy Seal
When Stephen Hobbs was a student at Woodberry, no one, himself included, would have guessed he had a future as a Navy SEAL. “I had no academic ambition and was not tremendously athletic,” Stephen remembers. “I even spent some time on probation — I was misguided.” That changed, though, during his senior year at Guilford College when a terrorist attack killed several CIA agents. “I decided I wanted to join the CIA, and becoming a Navy SEAL was going to make me an attractive candidate.” So, after graduation he enlisted in the navy, trained as a Russian linguist, and joined SEAL Team 2 five years later, the first linguist to be selected for SEAL training since Vietnam.
