Bishop Sam Hulsey Speaks in St. Andrew's Chapel

The Rt. Rev. Sam Hulsey, spoke from the pulpit of St. Andrew's Chapel on Sunday, October 26, 2014. He was bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas from 1980 to 1997 and served in parishes in Texas and Tennessee. He was educated at Washington and Lee University, St. Andrew's University in Scotland, and Virginia Theological Seminary.

Bishop Hulsey recalled his first visit to Woodberry Forest in the early 1980s when he brought his son, Byron Hulsey ’86, now the school's headmaster, to visit the school. "As soon as Byron saw Woodberry Forest School, he told me he didn't think he needed to visit any more schools," he said. In reflecting on the reading from Matthew in which the Pharisees question Jesus, Bishop Hulsey reflected on the purpose of education: "Schools are communities of question-askers," he said.
