 | We invite recent college graduates interested in working in an independent boarding school environment to apply for a Kenan-Lewis Internship at Woodberry Forest School, a boarding school for 400 boys in grades 9 through 12 located on 1200 scenic acres in Madison County, Virginia. The internship program, established by the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust in honor of alumni Frank Hawkins Kenan ’31 and Lawrence Lewis, Jr. ’37, helps interns develop the skills required of boarding school teachers while introducing them to all aspects of school life. Woodberry employs two interns annually for one-year appointments as full-time faculty members. Each Kenan-Lewis intern receives guidance from an experienced faculty member, observes classes, teaches at least one class independently, and explores professional development opportunities. Interns teach in one of the following academic areas, depending on Woodberry’s needs each year: academic development, the arts, biology, chemistry, Chinese, English, French, history, Latin, mathematics, physics, religion, and Spanish. Interns live in a school apartment on dorm and will be responsible for the boys who live there. They will participate in the extracurricular life of the school each of the three seasons of the school year as an assistant coach of one of the school’s athletic teams, or as an assistant in one of the after-school fine arts programs.
Preference will be given to those candidates who have the experience and enthusiasm necessary to contribute as classroom teachers and as assistants in afternoon sports or fine arts programs. Each internship carries a salary of $26,000 plus living quarters, meals in the school dining room, and health care benefits. We accept applications from college seniors and recent graduates for the upcoming academic year’s Kenan-Lewis Internships until January 1, 2013. Candidates chosen to interview at Woodberry will be notified by March 1, 2013. Applicants should send a cover letter; a résumé indicating their previous education, employment, athletic experience, and interests; their college transcript; and three letters of recommendation to the address below. Memorable Woodberry moments:
“Already, I have learned a great deal about the lives of my students, particularly those on the football team. I will never forget listening to each player explain why they play football, and how much they care about their teammates, their sport, and this school. The boys know their teachers and coaches care for them, and this trust is the foundation for a community here at Woodberry that is unlike any other.”
On teaching boys in a boarding school setting: “My experience at Woodberry so far has shown me the benefits of holistic education. Here, faculty and administration are not content to see each boy for 45 minutes a day; they understand that this minimal level of engagement will not bring about maximum learning and maturation. Even though I've been here for only a month, I have witnessed so many teachable moments occurring outside of class that would otherwise not be a part of my responsibility as a teacher, moments that happen on the football field or on dorm.”
